Second Airport In Bhubaneswar
Bhubaneswar is set to go global now. It has now been
officially declared that the state capital will have its second airport. There is
already an International Airoort in Bhubaneswar- ‘Biju Patnaik International
Airport’. The new terminal of Biju Patnaik International Airport was opened
just a few months back. And now, the plans to build the second airport of the
city have already started. According to the sources the second airport of
Bhubaneswar will be built in Mulipada, 40km away from Bhubaneswar. However, it
will take a minimum of 5 years for the plan to be materialized.
Now, the old terminal of the Biju Patnaik International
Airport is used for the international operations. A new airport is planned to
be build in Mulipada to where the international operations are planned to be
shifted. The number of passengers using Biju Patnaik International Airport has
been increasing continuously over the past few years. While the number was
around 8 lakhs in the year 2009-10, it increased to 10.5 lakhs and d 11.5 lakhs
in 2010-11 and 2011-12 respectively. In the year 2012-13, the number has
crossed the 13 lakh mark. As the traffic of the existing airport is expected to
increase drastically in the coming years, the new airport will be a relief for
the traffic controllers. There are plans to include 2000 acres of land under
the comprehensive development plan of BDA. IDCO (Industrial Development Corporation
of Odisha) will implement this project. However, before that the Airport
Authority of India (AAI) will assess the technical aspects of this project. For
this a feasibility study will be undertaken. After the clearance from Airport
Authority of India, the project is expected to progress.
So the first step towards this mega project is land
acquisition. 2000 acres of land is expected to be acquired by IDCO on the
outskirts of Bhubaneswar after which compound walls will be built around it to
avoid any attempt of encroachment. However, the plan is still at the discussion
stage. After finalizing different aspects of the project, it will be discussed
with the Airport Authority of India headquarters.
